A PAINTER AND HIS WIFE
General Information:
A Painter and His Wife by Katherine Lollar Rowland, a charming new memoir, tells the story of the life she and her artist husband, Elden Rowland, led in the art communities of Sarasota, Cape Cod and Montana. Members of what Tom Brokaw has called "The Greatest Generation," at the end of World War II they left jobs and family in Southwest Ohio to follow a dream.
Although experienced as a commercial artist, Elden had a dream of becoming a fine artist, a dream put on hold while he and Katherine worked at war jobs in Cincinnati. Released by V-J Day in August of 1945, they bought a house trailer and started out to travel while he established a career as a painter.
This memoir is a celebration of their new life, of the art communities in which it took place, and a tribute to the people who influenced them. It is the story of the development of an artist, indicative of a time of growth and change in an entire nation.
The narrative is illustrated by reproductions of Elden's work, more than 50 of them in color. The story traces Elden's life-long interest in Oriental art, philosophy and religion, as well as his commitment to exploring new ways of artistic expression. At the same time it tells of the opportunities that opened up for Katherine to make her own contribution in their exciting new world of painters and writers.
